Casey Johnson, the heiress to the Johnson & Johnson fortune, was found dead in her Los Angeles home on Monday. The 30-year-old socialite, who was reportedly engaged to former “Shot at Love” star Tila Tequila, apparently died of natural causes, the Los Angeles Police Department told the Los Angeles Times.
The specific cause of death was undetermined at press time, pending further tests. Johnson’s father is New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, and her great-grandfather was the co-founder of Johnson & Johnson, the famed maker of everything from baby powder to Q-Tips, Visine, Tylenol and Band-Aids.
“The Johnson family is mourning its tragic loss, and asks for privacy during this very difficult time,” said a statement from the Jets.
Tequila broke the news of Johnson’s death on her Twitter account on Monday evening. “Everyone please pray 4 my Wifey Casey Johnson. She has passed away. Thank u for all ur love and support but I will be offline to be w family,” she wrote, but returned to Twitter for a few more updates. “This is a very heartbreaking time for me. I just want some privacy as I deal with the loss of my Fiance Casey Johnson. [My] heart is shredded.”
Early Tuesday morning, a distraught Tequila tweeted, “I can’t stop these haunting visions of her and I … we made such a lovely couple, only beginning to spend the rest of our lives together.”
A fixture on the Los Angeles party scene and friend of fellow high-flying heiresses Nicky and Paris Hilton — who were featured alongside Johnson in the 2002 documentary “The It Girls” — Johnson drew headlines over the past month for her surprise engagement to Tequila. The couple announced their impending marriage in early December via an online video, in which Tequila showed off what she claimed was a 17-carat diamond engagement ring and the happy pair repeatedly kissed while lounging in frilly lingerie.
Paris Hilton also tweeted about Johnson’s death, writing, “I feel so sad right now, my heart is in pain. Just lost a longtime friend. My heart goes out to her family. R.I.P. Casey Johnson Love you :( … In bed crying, looking at baby pictures of Casey, Nicky and I. I feel so upset. I feel like I’ve lost a sister. My heart is broken. Miss her … God has another Angel by his side. Casey, we all Love and Miss you and know that you are in a better place. R.I.P.”
Johnson, who adopted a young girl, Ava-Monroe, from Kazakhstan in 2007, battled childhood diabetes and co-authored a book on the subject with her father called “Managing Your Child’s Diet.” She was arrested last November on charges of theft after allegedly taking clothing, jewelry and legal documents from an ex-girlfriend.
According to TMZ, unnamed law enforcement sources said Johnson appeared to have been dead for “several days.” Tequila told the site that the two had fought last week and that she’d been unable to reach Johnson on December 29 after the heiress had left her dogs at Tequila’s home.
Johnson’s last tweet was posted early on the morning of December 29, after she expressed excitement about seeing Tequila again and spending New Year’s Eve with her. “Sweet dreams everyone … I’m getting a new car.”
