Alexa Ray Joel Promises To Speak About Depression

Following apparent overdose, singer says she wants to shed light on 'heartbreak-related depression.'

Just weeks after overdosing on homeopathic medication in an alleged suicide attempt that landed her in a New York hospital, Alexa Ray Joel is planning to speak out about the depression that sent her into a tailspin.

In a message posted on her Facebook page on New Year's Eve, the daughter of Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Billy Joel and his ex, supermodel Christie Brinkley, thanked fans for their "incredible outpouring of love and support," saying that after a whirlwind of a month, reading their encouraging posts helped to cheer her up.

"I have many exciting new developments for the New Year, and I hope all of you can be a part of it!!" she wrote. "This includes new creative projects, and even more volunteer work in hopes to give back to the community and, most importantly, to help young girls with something I feel I know a GREAT deal about: Heartbreak-Related Depression. Although it does not get much attention in our society, it is a very serious and painful condition that often gets 'swept under the carpet.' "

Joel, 23, an aspiring musician, reportedly took an overdose of a non-lethal homeopathic anti-inflammatory medication last month. Some sources said she had been despondent following a breakup with her longtime boyfriend, musician Jimmy Riot.

"I hope to bring this topic more to light," she said of depression caused by the dissolution of romantic relationships. "I'm even going back to school for psychology in hopes to learn more about this and many other afflictions that many of us have had to face. ... After all, there's nothing more fascinating than the human mind and its respective conditions."

A spokesperson for Joel could not be reached for comment on what projects the singer has planned for 2010.
