Adam Lambert Wanted For Your Entertainment To Be A ‘Variety Platter’

'I wanted to create the most eclectic album possible, almost like a playlist,' he says of following his 'Idol' formula.

[artist id="3188063"]Adam Lambert[/artist] isn’t letting his American Music Awards controversy keep him from getting back to what’s most important, like his recently released major-label debut, For Your Entertainment.

The “American Idol” runner-up said it took some time to figure out who he wanted to be on the album, so he decided to include a little bit of everything. While he displayed his glammy side on songs like “Down the Rabbit Hole,” Lambert said he didn’t want to be known as only a disco king.

“Never did we decide to do one sound. It was always like, ‘I want a little bit of everything,’ ” Lambert told MTV News. ” ‘I want it to be a variety platter.’ ”

He said the album is a reflection of his weekly performances on “Idol,” where the singer frequently tried on different musical hats. “Basically, that’s what I did on ‘Idol’ week to week. I changed it up — my look, my sound, the arrangement, vocally, whether it was falsetto or if it was wailing. I wanted the album to do all of that and have all those different colors.”

Lambert does admit that he wasn’t sure he could pull it off, but he very quickly realized that by trying out different sounds on the album, he best encapsulated who he is and what people want.

“At first, it did come into question, like, ‘Are people going to get it?’ ” he said. “I said, ‘You know, we’ll see.’ I think that people are so single-minded — not single, but singles like radio singles. People have their playlists. They don’t necessarily listen to albums as much as they used to, and for that reason, I wanted to create the most eclectic album possible, almost like a playlist.”

At the end of the day, what is Lambert’s musical goal? “Just to keep ‘em dancing, keep ‘em rocking, keep ‘em guessing,” he said. “I don’t really know. Just to keep going, keep it fresh.”
