Ian Somerhalder Justifies His Bad-Boy Ways On 'The Vampire Diaries'

'Damon has his reasons and truly believes what he is doing is right,' he says.

Who doesn't love the idea of seeing two hot vampire brothers caught up in a rivalry over a girl? Well, if you don't, then you probably won't love the CW's "The Vampire Diaries," which premieres on Thursday (September 10) at 8 p.m. ET.

MTV News recently caught up with star [article id="1613202"]Ian Somerhalder[/article] to get the dish on the TV adaptation of L.J. Smith's young adult novels. "It sort of stems from this interesting love triangle between two boys, two vampire boys, who are in love with a seemingly mortal young lady," he teased. "Sometimes they're not [what they seem], but as the season progresses, you'll learn more."

Somerhalder has the illustrious task of playing the bad brother, Damon Salvatore, to Paul Wesley's nice guy, Stefan, but Somerhalder is quick to defend his character's seemingly naughty deeds.

"He makes trouble," he admitted. "Even people who do good things in the world, some do bad things too, and ... they have their reasons. Damon has his reasons and truly believes what he is doing is right."

And though Damon may be able to justify his evil vampire tendencies, that doesn't mean Stefan agrees with them. Already in the first episode of the series, you can tell the boys are going to be butting heads, a lot.

"Imagine you are 170-plus years old, and you've been this way for, like, 140 years, so your brother is the only person you have, basically," he explained. "And so he misses his brother, and he also comes back to town 'cause there's a girl there that reminds us of someone in the deep, dark past, and it raises a bunch of issues."

That girl is Elena (Nina Dobrev), a local high school student who already has Stefan falling for her. But Damon isn't going to let their love work out too easily. "A lot of complications will arise," Somerhalder promised.
