NEW YORK CITY — Many a fashionista's dream is to go to their local Target and pick up designs by Anna Sui based on her favorite "Gossip Girl" characters. Come September 13 that dream will come true. To honor the launch of Sui's clothing line, a few gossip girls, and even a gossip guy, attended a party at a limited-time pop-up store in SoHo.
Blake Lively, Penn Badgley, Taylor Momsen, Jessica Szohr and even Georgina Sparks herself, Michelle Trachtenberg, stopped by to support the line that Sui says was inspired by the show's fans in other countries. She felt the show was the right "muse."
"When I was traveling in China every break — like every lunch time, every dinner time — all the young ladies were asking me about, well, 'Where's Williamsburg?' and 'How do you define uptown and downtown?' " she explained to MTV News. "And I thought, 'Why are you asking me these questions?' And they were like, 'Oh, we love "Gossip Girl." ' "
The New York-based designer said that that international appeal has helped make the TV show what it is. Plus, it doesn't hurt that it's about all the catty drama among Manhattan's Upper East Side elite.
"It was like, here's a TV show that's not even broadcast in the country, and they're watching it online," she said. "And I think that's kind of been the big success of 'Gossip Girl': so many people watching it online rather than waiting for it to be broadcast on television, and this is perfect. And then when I understand the characters, they really represent what I do."
