To play Bella Swan this time around, she had to embrace much deeper emotions as the character deals with losing her love, Edward Cullen.
“I wouldn’t say that one was more difficult than the other,” she said at Comic-Con when asked to compare Bella in “Twilight” to Bella in “New Moon.” “This is definitely more … it’s a severely emotional movie. Everybody knows that. That’s the one big difference.”
In “Twilight,” Stewart reasoned, Bella’s emotions are more romantic than they are in the second film, when Edward’s departure sinks her in a deep depression until she finds that she has hallucinations of Edward whenever she’s in dangerous situations. “This movie’s not about discovery or falling in love, which is sort of an intense emotion, but this is like low, and there are high points for it too,” she said, adding, “And she’s a manic-depressive, basically.”
But she does note there is one person who is able to turn things around for Bella: her friend Jacob Black, once again played by Taylor Lautner.
“And to have a character that’s able to pull her out that, it’s a hefty feat, which I think [Taylor] pulled off,” Stewart said of her co-star. “But for me, there was no difference. It was just sort of heavier. There was more to think about. It’s a more mature part strictly because she’s older. She had more to deal with.”
