Trace Cyrus has confirmed that he and [artist id="3079280"]Demi Lovato[/artist] have broken up.
"Demi is one of my good friends, and I definitely became very, very close with her in the past few months, and it's something I really wanted to make work. But unfortunately, we both have very busy schedules — we're both on tour right now," said Cyrus, who is the lead singer of [artist id="2779430"]Metro Station[/artist]. "I'm always on the other side of the world and so is she, so it just seemed like something that can't work out at this time."
Cyrus and Lovato sparked rumors of a relationship in the spring, when they began tweeting back and forth. "We gave it a shot, and that's all you can do," Cyrus said. "Every time I hung out with that girl or talked on the phone with her, it was amazing. She's someone I can totally relate to."
Perhaps also making it difficult is the former couple's four-year age difference. "She is a lot younger than me," said 20-year-old Cyrus of Lovato, 16. "When someone is that much younger, you're looking for different things in relationships. Maybe when she's older and we've both matured, we'll be looking for the same thing and it can work out."
Last month, when MTV News asked Lovato about the rumors, she flatly denied that the two were dating. "I'm single! Yeah, I'm definitely single," she said, adding, "I try not to listen to rumors. Rumors are stupid. They're not true. I mean, of course you get stuff like that all the time. You read it online, and you're just like, 'Why did they even make that up?' But, I mean, I don't really remember them, 'cause they're not important to me."
