[artist id="1102"]Michael Jackson[/artist]'s 2001 album Invincible was his first album of the new millennium and his introduction to MTV staple "TRL." Jackson greeted fans in front of the Virgin Megastore in New York's Times Square clad in shiny blue pants and a matching shirt. Thousands of fans crowded around to get a glimpse of Jackson. The gathering in Times Square was significant for New Yorkers, as September 11 was still fresh in everybody's mind. But the return of Jackson provided an invigorating relief for the masses of fans who gathered for his "TRL" debut. "The biggest-selling artist in the history of music," host Carson Daly announced. " 'TRL' welcomes Michael Jackson!"
Daly described Jackson as being in great spirits during his Times Square appearance. He then brought Jackson up to the "TRL" studio for a chat about the new album, which by then had hit #1 in 13 different countries. "I don't take anything for granted," Jackson told Daly. "Every time there's a #1 album, I feel excited as if it's the first one."
The video for "You Rock My World" became the first new Jackson clip to ever make the "TRL" countdown, adding yet another testimonial to Jackson's multigenerational draw and influence.
Daly was unable to address Jackson's death on "Last Call With Carson Daly," as last night's episode was previously taped. However, he shared his feelings about Jackson's death via Twitter, saying, "Very sad about king of pop. I feel weird."
MTV will be paying tribute to MJ throughout the weekend with music videos, exclusive performances and calls and tweets from celebrity admirers and friends.
