Two vampires triumphed over Batman and the Joker at this year's MTV Movie Awards, as Robert Pattinson and Cam Gigandet of "Twilight" fame punched and kicked their way to victory over Christian Bale and Heath Ledger in the Best Fight category.
After the duo accepted their Golden Popcorn statue, MTV News caught up with the actors backstage at Los Angeles' Gibson Amphitheatre to get their thoughts on what the win means to them and how life has changed since "Twilight" became an international phenomenon.
"It's completely polar opposite," Pattinson confessed. "I don't even think anybody knew who I was last year."
Not that he's complaining now. In fact, the win for Best Fight had special significance for the 23-year-old Brit. "It made me feel really tough," he said. "Really hard. I don't think I've ever won a fight in my life. It was cool."
Pattinson also complimented his co-award-winner for his second straight victory in the category. At last year's Movie Awards, Gigandet and "Never Back Down" co-star Sean Faris took home the award thanks to a mixed martial arts brawl. "That's crazy how he won twice in a row," Pattinson said.
Gigandet himself was equally impressed. "It's amazing," he said. "For the second time, it was just as amazing."
How'd he pull off the Movie Awards repeat? "Just born talent," he said with a laugh.
While the award was the same, the circumstances surrounding each film were vastly different. " 'Twilight' was different than 'Never Back Down.' It's just a whole-new-world type of situation. It's all just so surreal," Gigandet said.
His "Twilight" character died during the first movie, so the actor hasn't joined Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and others for the second installment in franchise, "New Moon." Thus, he was happy to connect with his friends after a long time apart.
"I haven't seen any of them," he said. "It's good to see them all. They're all working and they're all doing a lot of stuff right now. They're going to keep the series going," he continued as he shifted to avoid workers carting a set of stadium seats through the lot. "And we're going to get run over, which is kind of fun!"
