UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Baseball player Wade Boggs ate chicken before every game. NASCAR drivers remove all $50 bills from their wallets. Actors sleep with the script under their pillows, theoretically to help them absorb dialogue.
Now, [movieperson id=”446132″]Andy Samberg[/movieperson] is just hours away from hosting the MTV Movie Awards, live in front of an enormous worldwide audience. So, what pre-event rituals is he participating in to get himself ready for Sunday evening?
“I listen to a lot of ‘Eye of the Tiger,’ ” the “Saturday Night Live” funnyman joked, referring to Survivor’s adrenaline-pumping 1982 hit. “I’ll just blast it. I’m staying at a hotel, but I don’t care about the neighbors. I’ll just blast it out at 6 a.m.,” Samberg explained. “And then I go back to sleep.”
In the past, the MTV Movie Awards has had a wide variety of hosts, from the quick-witted ([movieperson id=”45511″]Mike Myers[/movieperson]) to the unexpected ([movieperson id=”58720″]Will Smith[/movieperson]) to the badass ([movieperson id=”30855″]Samuel L. Jackson[/movieperson]). But it seems unlikely that even the most daring among them engaged in Samberg’s other ritual.
Pitchers have to stretch their arms before a big game, singers need to warm up their voices before a concert and Samberg is warming up his, well … we’ll let him explain.
“My weiner,” he said. “You take some Icy Hot, some BenGay, and then just fill up the bathtub with that.”
Don’t try this at home, kids. “I get strapped into one of those ‘Mission Impossible’-like rigs,” Samberg said of his ritual, which somehow is supposed to prepare him for Sunday. “And I get lowered from the ceiling so just my junk hits it.”
Would you expect anything less from a man known for putting his di– in a box? “It’s weird to look at,” he conceded. “I’ve had people walk in at the wrong moment. And, of course, I’m completely naked except a headband.
“Or a ski mask, sometimes I’ll do that,” Samberg revealed. “Me in a ski mask, levitating, with my junk in the BenGay.”
Will the vampires grab more trophies than the slumdog? What was the year’s ultimate onscreen WTF moment? It’s up to you to decide the winners of the 2009 MTV Movie Awards. Vote now, and tune in on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET, when the big show airs live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California.
