Andy Samberg To Host MTV Movie Awards

'Saturday Night Live,' Lonely Island star will helm show, which airs Sunday, May 31.

[movieperson id="446132"]Andy Samberg[/movieperson] has rapped about his plans for drowsy weekends, placed his private parts in a box and gotten a little too aroused while still fully dressed. Now the "Saturday Night Live" funnyman and star of digital shorts like "Lazy Sunday," "Di-- in a Box" and "Ji-- in My Pants" is bringing his unorthodox, always entertaining talents to MTV as host of the 2009 [url id="http://www.mtv.com/ontv/movieawards/"]MTV Movie Awards[/url] on Sunday, May 31.

"I'm super excited to host the movie awards," Samberg said in a statement. "I grew up watching the show and a lot of the past hosts are heroes of mine. Plus, my friends [in [article id="1603751"]the Lonely Island troupe[/article]] and I were writers for the show prior to working at 'SNL,' so it will be a sweet and satisfying homecoming. I can't wait to act really important."

The 18th annual MTV Movie Awards will air live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. Nominees will be announced in the coming weeks.

Past Movie Awards hosts include Ben Stiller, Jimmy Fallon, Mike Myers and Justin Timberlake. The show has always been known for its unconventional categories (Best Kiss, Best Villain, Best Action Sequence) and for unexpected moments from its cadre of celebrity presenters, nominees and attendees. [article id="1588463"]Last year[/article] the stars of "Tropic Thunder," Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black and Stiller, offered up a hilarious take on the importance of viral-video promotions. The winner for Best Movie was "Transformers," while Best Male Performance went to Will Smith ("I Am Legend") and Best Female Performance went to Ellen Page ("Juno").

In addition to Samberg's exploits during four seasons on "SNL," he's [url id="http://buzzworthy.mtv.com/2009/03/13/schooled-the-lonely-island-tells-you-5-things-you-need-to-know-about-incredibad/"]just released Incredibad,[/url] his first full-length comedy album with the Lonely Island (also featuring Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone) and will star in the upcoming Paul Rudd comedy [article id="1606701"]"I Love You Man."[/article]

"Andy's connection with the MTV audience is so strong. It's electric," said Stephen Friedman, General Manager of MTV. "The Lonely Island's digi-shorts are genius. We can't wait to see what subversive take he'll have on our audience's favorite movies of the year. We, like Andy's many fans, are thrilled he's decided to grace MTV with his unique talent."
