Let's face it — sometimes, when two thespians share an onscreen kiss, it can seem forced, even artificial. Most actors will readily admit that it's perhaps the most uncomfortable aspect of their work. When you insert romance between two relative strangers, who may or may not be attracted to each other, the audience sees right through it. So, getting that kiss just right, with the right amount of passion and longing, is key.
At this weekend's MTV Movie Awards, there are five lip-locking movie moments in the running for Best Kiss: Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey's peck in "Enchanted"; Briana Evigan and Robert Hoffman's make-out session in "Step Up 2: The Streets"; Shia LaBeouf and Sarah Roemer's buss in "Disturbia"; Ellen Page and Michael Cera's sweet spit-swap in "Juno"; and Daniel Radcliffe and Katie Leung's smooch from "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix."
But just who will take home the prize on Sunday? To handicap the foremost smooches, we consulted someone who knows a thing or two about making out: MTV's own Tila Tequila, MySpace phenom and the star of the bisexual dating program "A Shot at Love 2 With Tila Tequila."
"A great kiss, which I've had on my show, consists of a lot of exploding passion and just that tension that's been building up," Tequila said. "That makes for the perfect kiss. I do it all the time on my show. It's like you've been waiting so long to kiss this person, and then you finally let it out, and it's like, 'Oh my God.' "
Tequila knows about shoddy snogging too. "A terrible kiss happens when someone has very bad breath and their tongue actually feels like a rock, and it's stiff and it's cold, and it's like kissing a lizard — not that I know what that's like," she added. "But the tongue's not swapping smoothly with the saliva. If you're stuck in a terrible kiss, run for your life."
We showed Tequila clips from all this year's nominees, and asked her to weigh in on her favorites. First up was Adams and Dempsey's smooch, which left the reality-show star feeling a little creepy.
"So, he's kissing a dead girl who doesn't respond to his kissing? That's weird," she commented. "Then she wakes up? There is passion, there's fire, but this is definitely a movie kiss. That kiss was all right. She's dead, and he makes out with a dead chick, and she wakes up all of a sudden. That kiss was definitely made for 8-year-olds. He's kissing some dead girl, she wakes up, and that's it? Not my style."
Tequila wasn't all that impressed with Evigan and Hoffman's saliva exchange, either. "It's in the rain — that's so totally expected," she said. "It's raining, they're running towards each other, and they're making out in the rain. There's amazing passion there, and it's definitely hot, but a little bit too overdramatic for my taste. But kissing in the rain is so clichéd. I did that when I was 15."
LaBeouf and Roemer's intimate moment let Tequila down in a huge way. She said she would've liked to have seen more enthusiasm from the actors and didn't think the passion was realistic enough.
"There's some tension there — he's been waiting awhile to make out with this chick," she said. "If you've been waiting this long to kiss a hot girl that lives next door, you better rip off her clothes or something. They're talking in the middle of the kiss? No talking. You get the girl of your dreams, and you're going to make out with her and stop to talk? He should have ripped off her clothes, pushed her on the bed, and said, 'I've been waiting forever for this.' "
Page and Cera's kiss warmed Tequila's heart a touch, and she felt it was the most convincing of the bunch. "It's so cute," she said. "That's definitely a sweet kiss — not overdramatic, realistic. I like that one. It's really sweet."
But for her money, Tequila's putting it all on Radcliffe and Leung to take home the prize.
"This is hot," she said, while watching the clip. "Two nerds talking about wizards and spells, and out of nowhere, it's like, 'Oh, yeah.' I felt a release off of that one. They're kissing under the mistletoe? That's the perfect kiss. It gives every nerd hopes of finding love. I love nerds, so this is my favorite one. It's hot because it's so unexpected."
Tune in Sunday to see if Tila nailed it.
