Britney Spears Checks Into Rehab

Source close to situation says Spears' mother staged intervention.

Britney Spears has checked into rehab, according to her manager.

"Britney Spears has voluntarily checked herself into an undisclosed rehab facility today," Larry Rudolph said in a statement issued Tuesday (February 20). "We ask that the media respect her privacy as well as those of her family and friends at this time."

A source close to the situation told MTV News that Spears' mother had staged an intervention, and the Web site TMZ reports that Spears made the decision after several members of her family pressed her to do so. Photographs of Spears that the Web site Splash News claimed were taken at the Promises Residential Treatment Center in Malibu, California, surfaced on Tuesday afternoon.

A different source told MTV News that Spears' child-custody arrangement with soon-to-be ex-husband Kevin Federline remains unaffected for the time being.

The news caps a bizarre week for Spears, who on Wednesday reportedly checked herself into the Crossroads Centre, a treatment facility on the Caribbean Island of Antigua, only to leave less than 24 hours later.

Then, on Friday, she shocked fans by making an impromptu stop at a hair salon in Tarzana, California, and shaving her head, before heading off to a nearby tattoo parlor for some new ink (see "Britney Spears Shaves Head, Gets Tattoo"). Over the weekend, she was seen sporting a blond wig at several Hollywood hot spots.
