Nick Lachey Explains 'Awkwardness' With Jessica Simpson

'I think the awkwardness is more made up in the media than it is for [Jessica] and I,' singer says.

NEW YORK — After becoming the talk of the recent Teen Choice Awards with just one word, Nick Lachey had the MTV Video Music Awards red carpet buzzing by opening up more about the appearance, and his relationship with Jessica Simpson.

"The reason I did that was you could almost feel it in the room — everyone was feeling a little awkward about the situation," Lachey said about his "awkward" comment during the show (see "Britney Introduces K-Fed, Nick Lachey Scores 'Awkward' Award At Teen Choice 2006"). "I figured let's cut to the chase and call it what it is."

Lachey said he expected a different vibe at the VMAs, given that he and Simpson were both presenting, rather than her hosting, as she did at the Teen Choice Awards.

"You know, honestly, I think the awkwardness is more made up in the media than it is for she and I," Lachey said. "I think it will be fun tonight. I'm sure it will."

Lachey, who lost the Best Male Video to James Blunt, told Sway it's "officially a new day."

"It's a very exciting part of my life, and I'm excited to move on to the next chapter and see what that holds," he said. "Right now it's all about the music, all about this album, all about the tour and all about the fans."

Lachey's tour will kick off September 20 in Albany, New York, and feature Dirty Blonde and Joanna as openers (see "Nick Lachey Takes What's Left Of Him On Fall Tour ").

"I'm very excited to be out there and doing it again," Lachey said. "The way the fans responded to this project and responded to me being back in the music scene has been overwhelming for me, and I'm just very thankful and very blessed to be able to do this and very blessed to have great fans out here."
