Korn have played many memorable shows over the years, but nothing can top their gig at 37,000 feet last fall. Yes, they were in an airplane.
"We used battery-powered practice amps, David [Silveria] played this little drum set for a kid," singer Jonathan Davis recalled last week from Germany, where the band is currently touring. "We could only set up in the bulkhead, so I had to hide behind some seats and I sang through the PA of the airplane."
That intimate performance, for European contest winners and American troops who served in Afghanistan and Iraq, is captured in all its cramped glory on the band's latest DVD, "Korn: Live on the Other Side," due June 20.
"Live" also features Korn's entire set at Hammerstein Ballroom in New York last November.
"It was our first U.S. show without Head [guitarist Brian Welch], we were just happy to be playing again and it was a really good show," Davis said. "It's where we debuted [songs from the band's latest LP, "See You on the Other Side"] and it was shot in hi-def."
"Korn: Live on the Other Side" also features behind-the-scenes footage and interviews, as well as a Big Apple bus tour of New York that the band took with its fans. On June 19, the day before Live hits stores, the DVD will screen in more than 100 movie theaters in approximately 75 markets nationwide.
And about five weeks later, fans can catch the real thing when the Korn-headlined Family Values Tour kicks off July 27 in Virginia Beach, Virginia (see [article id="1528963"]"Korn Resurrect Family Values Tour With Deftones, Stone Sour"[/article]).
Davis said the band's still putting together its show, but promised an even bigger production than its recent arena trek. The show might even include an acoustic set, given the positive reaction Korn received from their recent AOL Sessions.
"Everyone's digging it, which is surprising," Davis said. "It's surprising to even pull it off. We'd never done it before and just knocked it out. I think we'll do more in the future."
Davis also said he's still hoping to turn their "Twisted Transistor" video concept into a movie and is now just waiting for a studio to sign on and fund the project (see [article id="1518034"]"Korn Expanding 'Twisted' Video With Snoop, Lil Jon Into 'Spinal Tap'-Style Film"[/article]).
