Glam-Rocker Gary Glitter Charged With Sexual Assault On Young Girls

The flamboyant performer allegedly committed indecent acts on minors during '70s and '80s.

Troubled glam-rock king Gary Glitter, who was arrested last year on child pornography charges, now faces new allegations that he assaulted teen-age girls in incidents dating as far back as the mid-'70s, according to Sgt. Dave Walbyoff of the Avon and Somerset police in Bristol, England.

The 58-year-old Glitter, a.k.a. Paul Gadd, is scheduled to appear May 18 in North Avon Magistrates Court in North Bristol, England, to answer the new charges, including several claiming that he had committed sodomy and sexual assault of girls as young as 10 during the '70s and '80s, Walbyoff said.

Walbyoff refused further comment on the case, saying that it was "subdued at the moment, we're not allowed to talk about it."

Glitter last ran into trouble with the law in November, when he was arrested at his London home after images of child pornography were allegedly found on his computer after he brought it in for repair. He was charged on 50 counts of taking indecent photos of juveniles.

The flamboyant Glitter -- best known for the booming anthem "Rock & Roll Part II," which charted at #2 in England in 1972, cracked the top 10 in the U.S. and is now frequently played at basketball and hockey games -- was famous for his platform shoes and outlandish costumes.

Glitter's stage show partially outshined his hit songs such as "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah!)" and "I Love You Love Me." He most recently toured with the legendary British rock quartet the Who during their Quadrophenia LP re-creation tour in 1996.

A recording on the press information line for the Avon and Somerset police listed the new charges as follows: sodomy and indecent assault on a girl of 15, between June 16, 1980, and June 15, 1981; and a pair of indecent assault charges on the same girl when she was 14, between March 1 and April 30, 1980. Glitter was also charged with indecent assault on a separate victim between the ages of 8 and 10, from March 1, 1975 to April 30, 1977.

Despite selling close to 20 million albums over the last 26 years, Glitter has faced difficulties before with a 1980 bankruptcy and an overdose on sleeping pills in 1986. Glitter most recently played himself in "Spiceworld," a self-parodying film about the British pop quintet Spice Girls, and contributed music to last year's Oscar-winning English indie film, "The Full Monty."
