This is probably not the kind of press former "American Idol" contestant Julia DeMato was looking for: The 26-year old hairstylist and finalist on the 2003 edition of the show was arrested in the parking lot of Pancho and Gringos Restaurant in Brookfield, Connecticut, early Sunday morning and charged with driving under the influence and drug possession.
According to a report from the Brookfield Police Department, officers observed DeMato drive her SUV into the parking lot of the restaurant more than an hour after it had closed. When they followed her in to find out what she was doing there at 2 a.m., they observed that she had been drinking, and arrested her for drunken driving after she failed field sobriety tests. The arrest report stated, "During a subsequent search of DeMato's vehicle, police found two marijuana pipes, a small quantity of marijuana and a glassine baggie with a small amount of white powder in her purse that field tested positive for cocaine."
DeMato was arrested and charged with possession of narcotics, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of less than 4 ounces of marijuana. Police would not comment further, and a person who answered the phone at DeMato's home said the singer would not discuss the arrest.
According to Danbury, Connecticut's News-Times, DeMato tearfully denied she had a drug problem following the arrest. "I am not a drug user," she told the paper. "This was just a misunderstanding. It's going to be taken care of in court, and that's that."
DeMato was released on a $10,000 bond and ordered to appear in court again on December 16.
