Pumpkins, Fastball Set For H.O.R.D.E. Tour

Also joining the summer-long festival tour are Paula Cole and Marcy Playground.

The normally hippie-centric H.O.R.D.E. (Horizons of Rock Developing

Everywhere) festival seems to be expanding its horizons again for this

summer's tour.

Among the latest rock-oriented artists slated to join the tour are Smashing

Pumpkins, power-poppers Fastball, Grammy-winning artist Paula Cole and alt-

pop band Marcy Playground. Each has been added to the lineup of the

seventh-annual H.O.R.D.E. festival, according to the tour's publicist.

The bands join a lineup that already includes such rock acts as Blues Traveler,

Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, Barenaked Ladies and Alana Davis.

The festival, whose roots are in a psychedelic, groove-oriented rock sound, has

in recent years moved toward a more hard-rock and pop style for both its

stages.

Some of the bands scheduled to be playing the second stage include Robert

Bradley's Backwater Surprise, Chris Stills (the son of legendary

singer/songwriter Stephen Stills), Emmet Swimming, Agents Of Good Roots,

David Garza, Fiji Mariners, Getaway People, Huffamoose, Catatonia, Cowboy

Mouth and Gov't Mule, according to H.O.R.D.E.'s official hotline.

Smashing Pumpkins publicist Gayle Fine could not confirm or deny the band's

involvement in the festival, but a source close to the H.O.R.D.E. publicist, who

did not want her name used, confirmed that these mainstage and second-stage

acts are scheduled to perform at the festival.

The Smashing Pumpkins are scheduled to perform on at least five dates in July,

according to the source, who added that Paula Cole would join the mainstage

acts for three weeks toward the tour's end.

This year's H.O.R.D.E. festival continues in the tradition of last year's outing,

which featured such modern rockers as Primus, Ben Folds Five and Morphine

playing on the same bill as classic rock legends Neil Young and Crazy Horse.

Previous incarnations of the H.O.R.D.E. festival have included such acts as

Lenny Kravitz, Widespread Panic and the Dave Matthews Band.

Christopher Meyer, a 21-year-old vet of the past three H.O.R.D.E. concerts,

wrote in an e-mail that he was worried that the mixing of styles would not be to

his liking. Saying that last year’s mish-mash of alt-rock, funk and classic rock

didn't leave a good taste in his mouth, Meyer added that was concerned with

the mix of acts slated to play this year. "I hate to say it, but I might be a bit

closed-minded when it comes to these things," he wrote.

On the other hand, 20-year-old Smashing Pumpkins devotee Amber Jensen

explained that she thought that the mixing of formats harkened back to the spirit

of the granddaddy of these touring festivals, Lollapalooza. "I think the lineup

sounds great," she wrote. "All the other festivals, including the now-absent

Lollapalooza, have gone with one type of music only. I'm glad to see H.O.R.D.E.

is keeping Lolla's spirit alive."

There will be more dates and bands announced in the near future.
