Living Colour

I used to keep fish and reptiles a long time ago.

Sonic Moderator

Hello, welcome. We're here tonight with Vernon Reid, formerly of Living Color!

Shmogger

Hey There! How's life Vernon? Were you on the Horde Tour this year?

VERNON REID

I played a Horde show in NY. Life is fine. I have been doing shows supporting

"Mistaken Identity." I did a lot of shows with Les Claypoole. I am going to Europe next month, and I will also be opening for Carlos Santana in NYC.

MichaelRoss

VERNON!! It is an honor!!! My question: I was doing some recording at Planet Dallas, Dallas TX, and I heard a story about your unwillingness to try a beefed up Marshall combo. Why are you so stubborn about using only your amp?

VERNON REID

Michael -- I use all kinds of amps. I don't remember that being the case.

When I am looking for a particular amp to use, I use it. I just don't

remember that story.

Sonic Moderator

Where is the show in NYC going to be?

VERNON REID

At The Beacon Theatre. It's on the Upper West Side.

Sonic Moderator

What was it like working with Prince Paul?

VERNON REID

A laughing riot. He was super cool.

GroovinMan

Hiya Vernon. I saw your band live at HORDE and your guitar blew me away. I am also a fan of the Blues Travelers and wondered if you got a chance to jam with John Popper or if you have any plans to record with him?

VERNON REID

I actually have recorded with John, in the early stages of doing songs for Mistaken Identity, he played on some music I was doing. It was great.

MichaelRoss

Vernon, do you have any pets, or are you on the road too much?

VERNON REID

I used to keep reptiles and fish a long time ago. There is one time I had a pet geko that I loved, but that was years ago. My ex wife had a cat that drove me insane.

Sonic Moderator

Which guitarist has influenced you the most?

VERNON REID

I would say maybe Carlos Santana b/c my interest in playing guitar started with hearing him -- that's arguable though. There are many guitar players that I dig and am really fond of.

Sonic Moderator

Is Jimi Hendrix one of them?

VERNON REID

Yes, Jimi is a guitar player that I dig.

MichaelRoss

What is your beverage of choice?

VERNON REID

It depends on the time of day. In the morning, fresh OJ. In the afternoon

sparkling h2o or apple juice. Late night: ginger ale with lemon, or saki

with sushi. Saki is the only alcohol I drink.

Sonic Moderator

I saw Living Color at Lollapalooza, do you miss playing monster stadiums?

VERNON REID

I can't really say that I loved playing arenas, I can't say that I miss it. I don't lay awake at night thinking about it. I love what I am doing now

Sonic Moderator

Can you tell us about the crazy keyboard with the funny name that your band uses?

Vague

Hi Vernon -- what are the current tour plans? Any chance of getting to Eastern Virginia?

VERNON REID

We did shows with King Chrimson. I am sure we will play more in the states. We have yet to get to the west coast -- I am sure we will be playing east coast dates.

MichaelRoss

How long were you in the studio?

VERNON REID

It was a lot of different sessions over a lot of time. We started in '94. All together it was really only a few months of recording.

Spacegrrrrl

Do you have anything interesting up your sleeve for the future?

VERNON REID

I just participated in a multimedia competition in Palo Alto as a judge

with Laurie Anderson. I am really into looking at New Media, someone

with whom I have been having discussions with combining computer activity

and music.

Sonic Moderator

Who else is in your band right now?

VERNON REID

I kind of have 2 bands. My Horde band is my live band, Mask. The other ensemble I play with is called My Science Project. I am interested in doing differant combinations of people.

Spacegrrrrl

Do you think Living Colour will jump on the bandwagon of "rock band resurrections" a la Kiss, Wasp, Motley Crue... Or do you think it's just a money thing?

VERNON REID

I can't see Living Colour in its original form coming back together unless everyone had a major sincere change of heart. I just don't see it happening.

MichaelRoss

What was it like to open for the Stones?

VERNON REID

Groovy.

Spacegrrrrl

Ever considered doing a movie?

VERNON REID

I love the movies. I am trying to do soundtrack work. As far as acting, I am always up for a new challenge.

Spacegrrrrl

What do you think of the state of alternative music today? And any choice words on your opinion of Marilyn Manson (tread carefully)?

VERNON REID

MM is like a more dysfunctional Alice Cooper if that can be imagined. As far as alt.music, in order for there to be a music scene, it has to exist in opposition to a massively popular and wildly held idea of popular music that is current at the time. Or it has to explore new sounds, new textures. I think alt.music is searching for its identity now that Smashing Pumpkins and Green Day are successful bands. It's in flux right now.

Vague

Are there any bands/musicians you would like to work with?

VERNON REID

Kevin Sheilds (My Bloody Valentine), Björk, Nas and Oludara. I would

love to play guitar with Brian Eno, Linto Quasie Johnson and Square Pusher.

Spacegrrrrl

Okay, who would you most like to do a cover of... and who would you most like to do a single/album/release with?

VERNON REID

Either a jungle version of "Somebody Else's Guy" by Jocelyn Brown, or

"The Day I Tried to Live" by Sound Garden with Terence Trent Darby

singing. I would love to record a full album with Brian Eno.

Spacegrrrrl

Sounds like you're well into the cyber side of things. Should we expect the likes of Living Colour mouse pads and virtual reality gigs?

VERNON REID

That might be the only time you see a Living Colour gig -- virtually!

Spacegrrrrl

Have you ever considered collaborating with Laurie Anderson?

VERNON REID

I think it would be cool. She is a great person and wonderful artist. I

wonder if Laurie and Lou Reed will do something?

GroovinMan

Vernon, Are there any unknown bands that are any good that we should be looking out for?

VERNON REID

There is a great Jungle artist named Square Pusher, he is killer. If you ever see Michael Hill and go check him out! He is the best. I like Soul Coughing too. Prince Paul has a record out now called Psych Analysis that is really good. Heavy Flow -- they are neo-punk. Mascara is cool too. Feela Brazillia -- ambient trip hop. And an experimental band called Stray life.

VERNON REID

Groovin Man, am I in the band or just putting it together?

VERNON REID

Prince, Ornette Coleman, Dennis Chambers, Melvin Giggs or Victor Woo, Tom Morello (of Slayer) and Mr. Manson (of Marilyn Manson) dueting with Madonna, mixed by Goldie and remixed by Tricky
