Mariah Carey, who was shut out at last month's MTV Video Music Awards, leads the list of nominees for the next major awards show, the American Music Awards, with four nods. Following closely behind are Kelly Clarkson, Green Day and 50 Cent with three nominations each.

Mimi will vie for Favorite Female Artist: Pop or Rock and Favorite Female Artist: Soul/ Rhythm & Blues Music at the 33rd-annual show on November 22, it was announced Tuesday (September 20). Her most recent record, The Emancipation Of Mimi, will compete for Favorite Album: Pop or Rock and Favorite Album: Soul/ Rhythm & Blues Music.

Clarkson will take on Carey in the female pop/rock artist and pop/rock album (for Breakaway) categories, as well as Maroon 5 and John Mayer for Favorite Artist — Adult Contemporary Music.

Green Day's nods came in the Favorite Band, Duo or Group: Pop or Rock, Favorite Artist: Alternative Music and Favorite Album: Pop or Rock (for American Idiot) categories, while 50 Cent will contend for Favorite Male Artist: Pop or Rock, Favorite Male Artist: Rap/Hip-Hop and Favorite Album: Rap or Hip-Hop for The Massacre.

Other multiple nominees include Eminem (Favorite Male Artist: Rap or Hip-Hop; Favorite Album: Rap or Hip-Hop for Encore), Black Eyed Peas (Favorite Band, Duo or Group: Pop or Rock; Favorite Band, Duo or Group: Rap/ Hip-Hop), Destiny's Child (Favorite Band, Duo or Group: Soul/ Rhythm & Blues Music; Favorite Album: Soul/ Rhythm & Blues Music for Destiny Fulfilled) and Fantasia (Favorite Band, Duo or Group: Soul/ Rhythm & Blues Music; Favorite Album: Soul/ Rhythm & Blues Music for Free Yourself).

The Killers, Jesse McCartney and Sugarland will compete for Favorite New Artist, the award Kanye West infamously lost to Gretchen Wilson at last year's ceremony (see "Usher, Outkast Clean Up; Kanye Strikes Out At American Music Awards").

Coldplay, System of a Down, Gwen Stefani, Will Smith, Rob Thomas, 3 Doors Down, R. Kelly, John Legend, Omarion, Ciara, Ludacris, Missy Elliott, Lil' Kim, Trina, Lil Jon & the Eastside Boyz, the Ying Yang Twins, T.I., 112, Pretty Ricky, Shakira and Daddy Yankee also earned single nominations.

The American Music Awards will broadcast live November 22 on ABC. Cedric the Entertainer is hosting the ceremony, to be held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Nominees for the AMAs are determined through a poll of 20,000 randomly chosen Americans.
