Paparazzo Shot With Pellet Gun Outside Britney Spears' Baby Shower

Police are investigating the shooting, which caused a minor leg wound.

A photographer was shot in the leg with a pellet gun on Saturday while staking out a baby shower in Malibu, California — hoping to snap a few pictures of the guest of honor, Britney Spears.

Brad Diaz, one of about 15 paparazzo stationed at the foot of the Malibu home's driveway, was clipped in the thigh by the plastic bullet, according to the Los Angeles Times. Firefighters were called to the scene and treated the wound; Diaz was transported to a local hospital for further treatment.

"If there's anything below minor, that's what the injury was," Lieutenant Steve Smith of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said of Diaz's injury. Although Diaz claims the shot came from the direction of the house, Smith said Diaz may have been too far away to have been hit from the home.

"It could've been somebody driving by, walking by," he told The Associated Press. "We have no idea where it came from." Smith would not identify the home's owner.

Spears' security team informed police that the pop star was attending a baby shower in her honor and said they were not involved in the shooting.

On Sunday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department told reporters that they would be assigning a detective to investigate the matter first thing Monday morning (August 8) "because of the media attention" the incident is receiving, Sergeant Robert Knudson explained.
