White Stripes Get Behind Satan With North American Tour

Band to play two U.S. festivals in June and July, tour throughout August.

The White Stripes — currently rocking relatively dumbfounded audiences in Central and South America — have announced a healthy dose of North American tour dates in support of their upcoming album, Get Behind Me Satan.

The tour kicks off with the Stripes' July 29 appearance at San Diego's Street Scene festival and takes them through most of the West and Midwest before coming to an end on August 31 with a three-night stand at Chicago's Auditorium Theatre. Previously, the band's only confirmed North American gig was a June 10 appearance at Atlanta's Music Midtown fest.

The challenging, callous tunes on Satan — due in stores June 7 — will hopefully go over better in the U.S. and Canada than they have in Latin America, where soccer matches have cut down on attendance at shows (see "White Stripes Find Satan's No Match For Soccer In Mexico"), and fans have generally greeted the Detroit duo with puzzled stares.

"What has this tour become?!?!" Jack White recently wrote in his journal on WhiteStripes.com. "We have climbed pyramids and played in front of people who have no idea who we were ... One day we will return to America and play for our older children, but now we have to tend to the newborns."

While there still might be the occasional puzzled glance from audiences north of the border — the new album was written primarily on piano, marimba and acoustic guitar, after all — the Stripes probably won't have to worry about any soccer games depleting their live crowds.
