Universal Pictures hopes to make a killing with "The Black Dahlia," a homicide drama which they will be distributing throughout North America in 2006. The film, which stars Josh Hartnett, Scarlett Johansson, Hilary Swank and Aaron Eckhart, is loosely based on the real-life murder of actress Elizabeth Short that rocked Los Angeles during the 1940s. Adapted from the book of the same name by "L.A. Confidential" writer James Ellroy, "Dahlia" follows two boxers-turned-cops who investigate the grisly murder. The film, from "Scarface" and "Mission: Impossible" director Brian De Palma, casts Mia Kirshner as the doomed actress. ... Will Hollywood's brightest redheaded star be buffing herself up to take on some mean boys? Lindsay Lohan has been making waves around town by revealing to several news outlets that she met with J.J. Abrams to discuss a possible role in his upcoming "Mission Impossible III." The prospect of pairing Lohan with series star Tom Cruise has sent some imaginations reeling, but the actress' publicist will only confirm that Lohan and Abrams met for a "general meeting." ...

With "Crash" in his rearview mirror, Ryan Phillippe is making plans to once again embrace his action-film side. Referring to "The Way of the Gun," his ultra-violent 2000 film, he calls it "my favorite film that I've done" and said, "I want to head down that road again, definitely." He's already wrapped production on "Chaos," a heist film that casts him as a rookie cop. In addition, "I have a really good film with Laurence Fishburne called 'Five Fingers' that comes out in September. [I play] a Dutch terrorist who is held captive, and I get my fingers cut off one at a time throughout the movie," he smiled. "So people who don't like me will enjoy it." ... Amber Tamblyn won't be talking to God anymore. "Joan of Arcadia," her critically acclaimed, ratings-impaired show, was canceled on Wednesday (May 18). "[It's] going to decide a couple of movies that I would like to do," Tamblyn said. Fans can see Tamblyn in next month's movie "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" and look forward to her unorthodox new book. "It's called 'Free Stallion.' It's a full-length poetry book, because I do a lot of slam poetry and spoken word and stuff like that." ...

Muppets creator Jim Henson may be gone, but one of his most beloved projects is about to rise from the ashes of cult-classic obscurity. The creators of "The Dark Crystal" hope to reinvigorate the 1982 puppet-powered fantasy film that freaked out a generation of youngsters and now hopes to do the same to their children. This time around, Jen and Kira return to fight for their kingdom when the Crystal is split once again in "The Power of the Dark Crystal." The sequel will blend the original's live-action animatronics with modern-day CGI animation, and plans are already in place for an accompanying animated series. ... If Mickey Rourke is coming back, we're first in line. As the living-comic-book blockbuster "Sin City" continues to wow theatrical audiences, Bob and Harvey Weinstein's temporarily named new company, Weinstein Co., has announced that they are developing a sequel to the hard-boiled flick. The plot of the second film is yet to be determined, but we're guessing that green screens are already being purchased en masse ...

In other Weinstein news, the soon-to-be-former Miramax honchos have picked up the North American distribution rights to "Hoodwinked! The True Story of Red Riding Hood." Their Weinstein Co. will be getting fast and faerie-ous with the feature length CGI animated comedy, which features a karate-kicking Red Riding Hood, a sarcastic Wolf and a thrill-junkie Granny. ... Chris Rock isn't in "Click," the upcoming Adam Sandler movie about a man whose life is turned upside-down when he finds a remote control that can control his life -- but he's trying. "So far it's good that there is absolutely nothing for Rock to do in it," Sandler laughed. "He's been calling me up, 'Just please Adam, let me. Why can't the remote talk?' " While Sandler won't be reuniting with his "Longest Yard" co-star in the film, he is looking forward to taking on a pop-culture icon in some hostile confrontations that he says might remind fans of his "Happy Gilmore" fistfight with Bob Barker. "[David] Hasselhoff's playing my boss in 'Click,' " Sandler smiles mischievously. "We go at it a little bit." ...

With his new film "Factotum" currently playing for audiences at the Cannes Film Festival, Matt Dillon says the time has come for the mainstream to embrace the story's autobiographical author, the late Charles Bukowski. "You know what I think is really interesting about Bukowski, in many ways he was a real working-class hero," said Dillon, who plays the writer's alter-ego, Henry Chinaski, in the film. "Even though some people might say he had sexist tendencies or whatnot, he never evaded the conflict of the war between man and woman. I think that's very universal. Not just the lowlife aspects of him, which is what I always loved when I was a kid, but I got to have a different appreciation for him later." ... Michelle Pfeiffer wants the world to remember one thing: "I Could Never Be Your Woman." The actress is in negotiations to join the film of that name, about a successful professional woman who has troubles when it comes to her personal life. The film will be written and directed by "Clueless" helmer Amy Heckerling.
