Beyonce In Talks For Potential 'Dream' Film Role

Destiny's Child singer might play lead in big-screen adaptation of musical 'Dreamgirls.'

Beyoncé might soon be fronting another R&B trio.

According to her spokesperson, the Destiny's Child singer is in talks to star in a big-screen adaptation of the Broadway musical "Dreamgirls" as the leader of a girl group called the Dreams.

Beyoncé would play Deena Jones, a character loosely based on Diana Ross during her years with the Supremes.

Bill Condon, who wrote the Oscar-winning movie version of "Chicago" and recently wrote and directed "Kinsey," has penned the screenplay and will direct. Laurence Mark, whose credits range from "Jerry Maguire" to the Mariah Carey disaster "Glitter," will produce when production starts in the fall.

Condon's script will stay close to Tom Eyen's "Dreamgirls" book and lyrics. The story revolves around three naive black female singers in the early '60s who find themselves in the midst of an industry dominated by white males.

A "Dreamgirls" adaptation has been in the works for years. It once had Joel Schumacher ("The Phantom of the Opera," "Phone Booth") attached to direct and Lauryn Hill in talks to star (see [article id="1429235"]"Fugees' Lauryn Hill Eyed For 'Dreamgirls' "[/article]).

Beyoncé, who made her acting debut as the star of MTV's "Carmen: A Hip Hopera," has since starred in "Austin Powers in Goldmember" and "The Fighting Temptations." Her latest movie, "The Pink Panther," a prequel to the original 1964 film that will also star Steve Martin, opens August 5 (see [article id="1485971"]"Beyonce To Star Opposite Steve Martin In 'Pink Panther' "[/article]).

Meanwhile, Destiny's Child just launched their Destiny Fulfilled ... And Lovin' It Tour, which is hitting Japan, Australia and Europe before coming to the States in July (see [article id="1497241"]"Destiny's Child's Tour Bus Likely To Smell Like Fries"[/article]).

House of Dereon -- Beyoncé and mother Tina Knowles' fashion label -- designed 60 ensemble costumes for the group and its dancers for the outing.

"By having Destiny's Child wearing House of Dereon on the tour, I am able to express my creativity and love of music and fashion," Beyoncé said in a statement. "Performing is not only about sharing my musical passions, but it's also about expressing my individuality."

House of Dereon will launch in select department and specialty stores in October.
