It seems that everyone has something to say about "American Idol" and MTVNews.com is no different. Here's the latest edition of our weekly performance-night roundup:
March 22 — Theme: Billboard #1 singles
Surprise performance: Is that Carrie Underwood or Christina Aguilera? Carrie came out smokin', and her performance of Heart's "Alone" was just as hot.
Fashion hits and misses: Hello Captain Obvious: Nadia's Mohawk has to go down in "Idol" history as the worst hair misstep ever. It's a nice idea in theory, doing the whole Cyndi Lauper funky-hair thing, but it just didn't work. Jessica's half-see-through unflattering top comes in a close second, and Nikko's coat looked plain silly. Thankfully there was Carrie.
Judging the judges: Randy woke up on the opposite (better) side of the bed this week and was on point with his critiques for the most part. (Although someone please tell him pink was so last season.) First Paula's kissing Simon, then she's hitting him. The drama! Thankfully, Simon's good at avoiding her and giving the most accurate of the critiques. (Sorry Paula: Anwar was off.) Simon is also dropping more analogies than ever, which are becoming a highlight of the show. His best line: It's a tie between comparing Anthony doing a sexy performance to "Randy going on 'Baywatch' " and comparing Constantine doing the Partridge Family to "ordering a guard dog and getting a poodle in a leather jacket."
Best audience sign: "Carrie You + Me = Us" accompanied by photos of Carrie, the guy holding the sign and a Conan O'Brien-style morphed picture of the two. That's a true sign Carrie's made it: She's already got a stalker.
Who will go: If it was Personality Idol, she'd be a favorite, but as a singer, Mikalah just ain't cutting it. She went back to another boring song, and she had no flair. (Who do you think should be the next to leave "Idol?" Vote in our poll.)
Who needs to step it up: Scott Savol was OK (although he picked a song Jessica did a few weeks ago), but his performances are starting to run together. He needs to show some versatility.
Who is the one to beat: Bo Bice was brilliant once again, this time showing a different side with Jim Croce's "Time in a Bottle." Simon, however, thinks Carrie's got it won, and his predictions have been accurate in the past.
Guest judge: Brandy, who served as a guest judge on "American Idol" during the auditions, returns to the post for MTVNews.com. "Nadia Turner is amazing. What I love about her is that she is who she is and she doesn't care ... I respect that. It took about five or six years for me to find my voice and for her to already know it and do it, go girl. I'm proud. I have my favorites. I love Vonzell. I want Mikalah to be goofy again ... Anwar Robinson is off the chain. I think he is so amazing."
You told us:
Anthony Fedorov has the best voice overall, but he has not been really showing it. And Mikalah really needs to go. Her voice is extremely annoying.
One of the rockers with the long hair could win this. So could Nadia Turner.
Nadia and Bo are clearly the best performers of this group.
