Jesse McCartney’s character on the WB’s “Summerland” may be a troubled teen surfer, but in real life the actor/musician is shredding a huge wave of success.
“You never expect these things to happen,” he said. “I can’t explain to you the gratification with that, what it feels like to have all this stuff going on. I feel really blessed. I’ve had such support from everyone, from every angle, from fans to management to the record label. It’s been a very long and successful ride.”
From the outset, McCartney worked to ensure that the experience would be a positive one. In creating Beautiful Soul, McCartney’s main goal was “making sure it was very upbeat and enjoyable. It’s a pop record, with a little bit of this urban, kinda like R&B, twist to it. The album is filled with variety; it’s definitely an eclectic album. I’m very happy with the way it panned out.”
McCartney’s first headlining tour starts May 2 in Sacramento, California. The New York native described his live performances as simple and intimate. “It’s an acoustic guitar, myself and a box drum, which is my drummer that’s just sitting on top of this box.” McCartney is excited about adding to the bare-bones setup, though. “We’re rehearsing the full band — which is like a seven-piece band, major, full-out — for the tour this summer.”
With his debut album now platinum and the title track retired from the “TRL” countdown, McCartney will head to New York to shoot a video for his new single, “She’s No You.” That song debuted on Monday’s episode of “Summerland,” though another McCartney track, “Get Your Shine On,” is featured on the series’ soundtrack, which hit stores Tuesday.
Back in fictional California beach town Playa Linda, things aren’t going as well for McCartney’s character, Bradin Westerly. “He doesn’t know what he’s doing with his life,” McCartney explained. “This character takes a step forward and three steps back and gets wrapped up in drugs and alcohol for a while. It’s going to be a very juicy dramatic season. Aaron Spelling knows his drama, so you know it will be cool.”
