Jamie Foxx Gets Two Oscar Nods, ‘Aviator’ Leads Pack

Martin Scorsese's Howard Hughes biopic nabs 11 nods.

Coming off his Golden Globes win, Jamie Foxx remained hot at Tuesday’s announcement of the Oscar nominations, snagging both Best Actor (“Ray”) and Best Supporting Actor (“Collateral”) nods.

Largely steering clear of the controversial “The Passion of the Christ” and “Fahrenheit 9/11,” Academy voters showered love on a number of flicks, handing out multiple nominations to Martin Scorsese’s epic tale of reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes, “The Aviator” — which leads the pack with 11 nods — the drunken buddy drama “Sideways,” Clint Eastwood’s boxing drama, “Million Dollar Baby,” and Foxx’s Ray Charles biopic, “Ray.”

The Academy Awards ceremony, hosted by comedian Chris Rock, will take place on February 27.

Nominated for the coveted Best Picture prize are “The Aviator,” “Ray,” “Finding Neverland,” “Million Dollar Baby” and “Sideways.” The race for the Best Director award pits a number of wily veterans against each other, as well as a newcomer with just a handful of films to his credit. Legendary director Scorsese — who has never won a directing Oscar — goes up against Oscar winner Clint Eastwood, veterans Taylor Hackford (“Ray”) and Mike Leigh (“Vera Drake”)as well as Alexander Payne (“Sideways”).

The Best Actor category features two of Hollywood’s biggest heartthrobs battling against a sentimental favorite and a multiple Oscar winner. Johnny Depp (“Finding Neverland”) — earning his second straight nomination — will go up against fellow matinee idol Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Aviator”), grizzled icon Clint Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby”), acclaimed character actor Don Cheadle (“Hotel Rwanda”) and Globe winner Foxx (“Ray”). With his stirring portrayal of the testy, tortured piano genius, Foxx is considered a leading contender.

The contest for Best Actress will also have a showdown of sorts, as it features Hilary Swank (“Million Dollar Baby”) and Annette Bening (“Being Julia”) squaring off again for the first time since 1999, when Swank (“Boys Don’t Cry”) bested Bening’s lauded work in “American Beauty.” Also nominated for Best Actress are Catalina Sandino Moreno, who played a conflicted drug mule in “Maria Full of Grace,” veteran actress Imelda Staunton for “Vera Drake” and Kate Winslet for “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” In the Best Animated Feature category, “Shrek 2″ will go up against “The Incredibles” and “Shark Tale.”

“Finding Neverland,” “Million Dollar Baby” and “Sideways” were also nominated in the Best Adapted Screenplay category. Best Original Screenplay nominees include “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “The Aviator,” “Hotel Rwanda,” “The Incredibles” and “Vera Drake.”

Though Mel Gibson’s religious blockbuster, “The Passion of the Christ,” was shut out of the major categories, it received nominations for cinematography, makeup and original score.

Because Michael Moore submitted “Fahrenheit 9/11″ for Best Picture, he missed out on a Best Documentary nomination. Morgan Spurlock is among the leading contenders in that category, with his hilariously shocking film about a disastrous one-month all-McDonald’s diet, “Super Size Me.” Also nominated in the documentary category is the Tupac biopic “Tupac: Resurrection.”

Counting Crows were nominated in the Original Song category for the bouncy pop tune “Accidentally in Love” from “Shrek 2.” Also nominated was the Glen Ballard ballad “Believe” from “The Polar Express,” sung by pop-opera hunk Josh Groban.
