New Releases: U2, Gwen Stefani, Nirvana, Evanescence, Fantasia, Ruben Studdard & More

U2′s ability at deactivating explosives remains to be seen — but they sure are adept at igniting media attention.

Details on the Irish rockers’ 11th studio album, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, have been leaking for months, and the anticipation will end on Tuesday when the album hits shelves, fueled by the radio success of its first single (and iPod commercial), “Vertigo.”

Also hitting stores in time for the day after Thanksgiving — the biggest shopping day of the year — is the solo debut from No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani, who has decided to “take a chance” with Love, Angel, Music, Baby, which was partially inspired by her visits to Japan.

The long-delayed Nirvana box set will also see the light of day this week. With the Lights Out features 81 tracks, 68 of which were previously unreleased, including rehearsals, outtakes, demos and covers. A DVD is included in the set, featuring live and rehearsal footage, home movies and 20 full-length videos.

Two American Idol alums are releasing albums this week. Third-season winner Fantasia releases her debut, Free Yourself, while second-season victor Ruben Studdard’s sophomore album, I Need an Angel, hits shelves as well.

Following their highly successful 2003 breakthrough album, Fallen, Evanescence will release the live album, Anywhere But Home. The slightly more cheery Jessica Simpson will release her Christmas album, Rejoyce, this week.

Also out this week are albums by Anthrax (The Greater of Two Evils), the Diplomats (Diplomatic Immunity), John Frusciante (A Sphere in the Heart of Silence); Goo Goo Dolls (Live in Buffalo: July 4, 2004); and Pete Yorn (Live).
