'Scrubs' star to co-write and direct adaptation of children's book.

“Scrubs” star Zach Braff, who wrote, directed and starred in the upcoming “Garden State,” will next direct the big-screen adaptation of the children’s book “Andrew Henry’s Meadow,” which he and brother Adam Braff are scripting. “[It's] a big, fun, summer kids’ movie,” Zach said. “It’s kind of like ‘Goonies’ on acid … [but] PG, believe it or not.” … Colin Hanks is the latest actor to sign on for Peter Jackson‘s “King Kong” remake. Tom Hanks‘ son will play a production assistant to Jack Black‘s filmmaker character, Carl Denham, in the movie, which will also star Naomi Watts and Adrien Brody. …

Brendan Fraser is in talks to voice the title character in the animated “Big Bug Man,” about a star-crossed man who gains the unusual powers of insects that have bitten him while working for a crooked candy company. Marlon Brando recorded a supporting role in the movie before he died. … After finishing “Batman Begins,” Christian Bale will join Colin Farrell in “The New World.” Terrence Malick (“The Thin Red Line”) is directing the 17th century American epic inspired by the legend of John Smith and Pocahontas. …

Along with co-starring in the upcoming romantic comedy “Getting Played” with Bill Bellamy and Carmen Electra, and the action comedy “Blast!” with Eddie Griffin, Vivica A. Fox has joined the cast of the Lifetime drama “Missing” along with Mark Consuelos, Kelly Ripa‘s husband. “Every week we have a new missing case and my partner has psychic visions, so she helps me to solve a lot of cases,” Fox said. “We go on these great adventures, and every week I’m whupping somebody’s ass. I’m loving it.” The second season of “Missing,” which Fox is co-executive producing, kicks off Saturday. …

Marlon Wayans said he and his brothers are open to making a “White Chicks” sequel. “If the audience continues supporting it and laughing and we’re forced to, then for sure,” he said. “Maybe we’ll do ‘Black Chicks.’ That’d be a whole lot easier.” … “Shattered Glass” star Peter Sarsgaard, who will return to theaters later this month in “Garden State,” will join Jodie Foster in “Flight Plan.” The thriller, which will shoot in September, follows a woman whose daughter mysteriously disappears while aboard a commercial airplane. …

Denzel Washington will direct and produce a biopic about legendary singer/actor Sammy Davis Jr., who died in 1990 of throat cancer. The film has yet to be cast and Washington has no plans to star. … Mark Pellington, who went on to direct “The Mothman Prophecies” and “Arlington Road” after helming Pearl Jam‘s “Jeremy” video, has agreed to direct Harrison Ford in “The Wrong Element.” Ford stars as a security expert racing to illegally transfer funds to save his kidnapped wife and daughter. …

Jonathan Hensleigh, who directed and co-wrote “The Punisher” but is perhaps best known for writing “Armageddon,” will next direct a remake of 1954′s “The Naked Jungle.” The original starred Charlton Heston as the owner of an Amazon chocolate plantation threatened by a two-mile-wide, 20-mile-long army of ants. … After already signing on for “The Spiderwick Chronicles” and “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,” “Mean Girls” director Mark S. Waters continues to fill up his schedule with the addition of “If Only It Were True,” a romantic comedy with Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo in the running to co-star. Waters has also agreed to adapt the 1971 novel “The Dice Man” with his screenwriter brother, Dan Waters. …

Shooting started in Los Angeles this week on “The Virgin of Juarez,” a true-story drama starring Minnie Driver as a journalist investigating the murders of young women in the Mexican border town of Ciudad Juarez. More than 400 women have been found dead in and around Ciudad Juarez since 1993, many of whom appeared to have been sexually assaulted or tortured. …
