Staind’s Aaron Lewis Rolls The Dice On Solo Tour Of Casinos

Road trip to hit Florida, Connecticut and (naturally) Vegas.

Before he co-founded Staind in 1994, singer Aaron Lewis performed solo acoustic shows across New England. And now, with his band enjoying some downtime, Lewis is picking up his guitar and doing it again — except this time, he’s hitting casino stages.

It’s hardly a gamble. In March he played shows at casinos in upstate New York and Atlantic City, New Jersey, and they went well enough for him to schedule at least seven more concerts in May and July, all in cities where the wheels spin and the dice roll.

“It’s a nice, refreshing, different-twist way of playing our songs,” Lewis said. “I’m gonna play a few choice covers and 10 or 11 Staind songs for no other reason than to do something different and offer something unique for the people that end up going to see the show.”

The first concert will be on May 7 at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. The last is scheduled for July 3 at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas.

Aside from his solo gigs, Lewis is waiting to hear from his bandmates in Staind. Guitarist Mike Mushok has boxes of tapes filled with musical ideas, and after he goes through them and writes some new music, Lewis will join in.

“I can’t write lyrics to songs that aren’t songs yet,” he explained. “I’ve never understood how someone can write words and then apply those words to a song. There’s a rhythm and flow to lyrics and how they’re supposed to fall within the music. How can you write lyrics to a song if there is no song?”

In the meantime, Lewis can also be heard on the track “Fallin’ Out” from the new Jimmie’s Chicken Shack record, Re.present, due April 27. Lewis wrote the song with the band’s frontman, Jimi HaHa, two years ago and has been waiting for its release.

“Those guys are good friends of ours,” Lewis said. “Jimi came out while I was on tour and hung out for four or five days and rode the bus and we wrote a few songs. It was really fun.”
