Nick Lachey Signs Deal That'll Put Even More Cameras On Him

'Newlyweds' co-star developing TV pilot with ABC.

"Newlyweds" penny pincher Nick Lachey has discovered a new means for saving money — carpooling to work with his wife.

The former 98 Degrees singer has signed a development deal with ABC, a move spouse Jessica Simpson made in November (see "Jessica Simpson Dreams Of Jeannie Role, But Sitcom Comes First").

Under the deal, Nick will star in a comedy or drama pilot next season. "He's open to either," his manager, Marty Adelstein, said Tuesday (January 27). "It just depends on the material."

Lachey, who will play Tom Jones in the February 15 episode of "American Dreams," will also work with ABC's sister film studio, Walt Disney Pictures, on potential movie projects.

The singer's show will be separate from his wife's, although it could air on the same night.

Nick and Jessica are also starring in a variety-show special that will air March 28 and which could potentially become a separate series, Adelstein said. That show is being produced by Jessica's father, Joe Simpson, who also produces "Newlyweds," and Joel Gallen, the longtime MTV Movie Awards producer who has also produced several Super Bowl halftime shows. The special will feature a mix of music and comedy along with celebrity guests, according to a spokesperson at Joe Simpson's office.

Musically, Lachey and Simpson also plan to join forces, although unlike their variety show, it will stay clear of the Sonny and Cher model (see "Jessica And Nick Plan Duets Album, Say No To Sonny And Cher").
