'Return Of The King' Receives Pack-Leading 11 Oscar Nominations

'Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World' just barely trails lead of Frodo and friends with total of 10 nods.

After cleaning up at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" looks to pull off a similar feat at the 76th annual Academy Awards. The third and final chapter of the epic trilogy received a pack-leading 11 Oscar nominations Tuesday, including ones for Best Picture and Best Director.

The high-seas adventure "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" just barely trails the lead of Frodo and friends with a total of 10 nods, which also include Best Picture and Director.

"Lost in Translation," "Mystic River" and "Seabiscuit" round out the Best Picture nominees, while Fernando Meirelles ("City of God"), Sofia Coppola ("Lost in Translation") and Clint Eastwood ("Mystic River") will compete against Peter Jackson ("Return of the King") and Peter Weir ("Master and Commander") for the Best Director award.

"Return of the King" also earned Oscar nominations for Best Original Score and Best Song, Visual Effects, Film Editing, and Adapted Screenplay for its big-screen translation of the J.R.R. Tolkien novel. At the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, the film won in all of the four categories in which it was nominated, including best director and best dramatic picture (see "Third Time's A Charm For 'Lord Of The Rings' At Golden Globes").

Bill Murray received a Best Actor nod for his role as a lovelorn American in Tokyo in "Lost in Translation." He's up against Johnny Depp in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," Sean Penn in "Mystic River," Ben Kingsley in "House of Sand and Fog," and Jude Law in "Cold Mountain." The Civil War epic, which received seven nominations overall, also yielded a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Renée Zellweger. Its leading actress, Nicole Kidman, however, was snubbed, as was director Anthony Minghella. Zellweger's acting chops are up against Shohreh Aghdashloo ("House of Sand And Fog"), Patricia Clarkson ("Pieces of April"), Marcia Gay Harden ("Mystic River") and Holly Hunter ("Thirteen").

Leading actress nominations include Charlize Theron, for her portrayal of serial killer Aileen Wuornos in "Monster," Diane Keaton ("Something's Gotta Give") Keisha Castle-Hughes ("Whale Rider"), Samantha Morton ("In America") and Naomi Watts ("21 Grams").

Alec Baldwin ("The Cooler"), Benicio Del Toro ("21 Grams"), Djimon Hounsou ("In America"), Tim Robbins ("Mystic River") and Ken Watanabe ("The Last Samurai") will all be vying for the Best Actor in a Supporting Role award.

The 76th annual Academy Awards ceremony takes place February 29 in Los Angeles. Billy Crystal will host the program.
