'50 First Dates' star will next appear with Téa Leoni in romantic comedy 'Spanglish.'

Adam Sandler will follow his upcoming reunion with Drew Barrymore, "50 First Dates," with another romantic comedy, "Spanglish," directed by James L. Brooks ("As Good As It Gets," "Terms of Endearment"). Téa Leoni co-stars in the story about a man who falls for a Latin woman. "I play a chef in it," Sandler said recently. "I learned how to cook. If you need some bacon, I can make that for you. If you want some veggie bacon, I can slap some of that out for you too. I can cut the cucumbers good." ...

Although he's rumored to be in the running to direct "The Fantastic Four," "Lord of the Rings" actor Sean Astin said over the weekend his schedule is clear. "I'm wide open at the moment. We'll see what comes down the pipe — hopefully something good, either something comedic or something dramatic or something in front of the camera or something behind the camera." ... Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal are attached to star in "The Hulk" director Ang Lee's next movie, "Brokeback Mountain," about two gay cowboys who meet one summer on a Wyoming ranch. The men remain close but go on to live drastically different lives. Filming will begin in the summer. ...

Chris Evans, who co-stars alongside Erika Christensen in the upcoming "The Perfect Score," has two other movies in the can, an indie called "The Orphan King" with Alexis Bledel ("Gilmore Girls") and a thriller called "Cellular" with Kim Basinger and Jessica Biel, due in May. "Kim Basinger is a woman who gets kidnapped by crooked cops — I won't tell you why — and she gets tossed in an attic," Evans explained. "She finds a broken phone, an old piece of crap and she kind of clicks wires together for a while and gets it to ring, miraculously, and it comes to my cell phone. So, at first, I obviously don't believe her, then it's me trying to save her. I can't go to the cops 'cause they're crooked. William H. Macy plays the one good cop." ...

Amy Smart, Ashton Kutcher's co-star in the upcoming "Butterfly Effect," will next be seen in the "Starsky & Hutch" movie starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson and due March 5. "Carmen Electra and I play the cheerleaders that go on a date with them," Smart said, adding that her favorite scene is a cameo from Will Ferrell. "He is one of the funniest guys right now." ... "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" actress Michelle Trachtenberg has signed on to star in "Ice Princess," a comedy about a teenage nerd realizing her dream of becoming a champion figure skater. ... Kevin Costner will follow up "Open Range" with another western, "Horizon." He will again direct and star. ...

Morgan Freeman is still waiting for the script to be finished, but the "Bruce Almighty" co-star plans to portray South African President Nelson Mandela in the biopic "Long Walk to Freedom." "We're trying to adapt his book to a screenplay and it's very daunting, very hard to do because there are over 700 pages in the book and you've gotta clean all that down to something that can be held within at least three hours," he explained recently while promoting "The Big Bounce." "We've always had the producer, Anant Singh ('I Capture the Castle'), the one working on getting it done, and we've always had the director, Shekhar Kapur ('The Four Feathers'), so now it's about money, and when that all comes together, we're going to be down in South Africa working on it." ...

Pope John Paul II's secretary has denied reports that the pontiff offered his endorsement of Mel Gibson's controversial "The Passion of the Christ." He claims the Pope was wrongly attributed to the comment "It is as it was." ... "Cold Mountain" earned 13 nominations from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, including a Best Picture nod along with "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," "Big Fish," "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" and "Lost in Translation."
