R. Kelly In Talks To Score Broadway Version Of 'Rocky'

Tony winner Thomas Meehan has signed on to write script.

It looks like it could be a "Rocky" year for R. Kelly, but that's not entirely a bad thing.

According to a spokesperson for the singer/songwriter/producer, Kelly is in talks with Broadway producers to compose the score for a musical based on the 1976 boxing movie. Thomas Meehan, the three-time Tony winner and librettist of "Annie," "The Producers" and "Hairspray," has signed on to write the script for the musical.

Sylvester Stallone, who wrote the original screenplay, gained his first taste of fame with the movie for his role as Rocky Balboa, a smalltime boxer from Philadelphia who beats the odds by going the distance against heavyweight champion Apollo Creed.

The film's inspirational story spawned four likeminded sequels. Two songs from "Rocky" films, Bill Conti's instrumental "Gonna Fly Now" and Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger," hit #1 in 1979 and 1982, respectively.
