Peedi Crakk, Lloyd Banks, Whoo Kid Up For Mixtape Awards

But strangely, Snoop Dogg got zero nominations this year.

Looks like it might be a big year for Big Mike, the onetime Mixtape Awards Rookie of the Year who this year is up for Best Mixtape DJ against Action Pac, Whoo Kid, DJ Technic, P-Cutta and Absolut.

The annual Mixtape Awards, spearheaded by founder Justo Faison, will take place January 14 at an undisclosed New York location with the legendary Red Alert as host. Performers and presenters will be announced at a later date.

The coveted Mixtape Artist of the Year category, which 50 Cent won last year, again includes a representative of the G-Unit. This time it's Lloyd Banks getting props. Banks goes against State Property's Peedi Crakk, former "Making the Band" tryout Jae Millz, Xavier, Saigon, Sacario and the Diplomats.

A couple of glaring snubs include Snoop Dogg, who's been hot and heavy in the mixtape game with his Welcome to the Chuuch series, and D-Block, who practically live on the underground circuit. DJ Clue was also left off the nomination list.

Current mixtape champ Kay Slay wasn't. After winning Best Mixtape DJ three years in a row, he retired from the category, but he and Big Mike are up for Best Mixtape Duo 2K2. Slay is also going head-to-head with DJ Envy for Best Commercial Mixtape.

The Mixtape Awards usually happen at the end of each year but were pushed back a few weeks due to production problems. The 2002 ceremony was especially memorable. The show ended after Kay Slay and Pudgee P started scrapping backstage and it spilled over to the stage (see "Mixtape Awards Cut Short After DJ Kay Slay, Pudgee P Get In Fight"). Still, most DJs will tell you that this is their favorite event of the year.

"It feels good to be recognized ... as one of the top DJs with just over a year in the mixtape game," multiple nominee Mike Love said Wednesday (January 7).

"For me, the biggest award is knowing that I'm actually part of the hip-hop movement," said DJ Vlad, who put out two of the most talked-about mixtapes of the past year in Rap Phenomenon volumes one and two.
