New Releases: Ruben Studdard, Ryan Adams, Kelis, Hoobastank, Nick Cannon, The Offspring & More

Ruben Studdard may have beat Clay Aiken in “American Idol,” but Aiken beat Ruben to the record stores. Now the boys are tied up with Ruben’s release of Soulful this week.

Fat Joe joins the velvet teddy bear on the Soulful cut “What Is Sexy.” Another collaborator on the LP is Pretty Tony on “Can I Get Your Attention?” and some behind-the-scenes work is done by Swizz Beatz and R. Kelly. Other songs include Donny Hathaway’s “For All We Know,” the Bee Gees’ “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” and the previously released “Superstar” and “Flying Without Wings.”

We already know that her “Milkshake” brings all the boys to the yard. We don’t need her new album to tell us that Kelis is Tasty, but we’ll take it. The Neptunes produced five songs and P. Diddy, Timbaland, Rockwilder, Dallas Austin, Wyclef and Raphael Saadiq took up the rest.

Musiq continues his tradition of smashed-together album and song titles — this time it’s Soulstarradio featuring the single “Forthenight,” and an emphatic Ryan Adams releases his second Love Is Hell EP.

Nick Cannon’s a busy man this week. First, he’s got his self-titled album featuring the single “Gigolo” and guest appearances by Mary J. Blige, B2K and R. Kelly. He’s also releasing a movie, “Love Don’t Cost a Thing,” with a soundtrack that features Chingy, P. Diddy and Mr. Cheeks.

Westside Connection — Ice Cube, WC and Mack 10 — make Terrorist Threats, while those Big Money Heavyweights, the Big Tymers, drop new material alongside Hoobastank’s The Reason and the Offspring’s Splinter, an album the band one time joked would be called Chinese Democracy.
