Metallica Line Up 73 North American Tour Dates For '04

St. Anger documentary expected to screen in select cities.

The last major Metallica concert in North America was August 10. Since then, the band has been promoting its metal in Europe and other places where St. Anger met with more acclaim than it did in the U.S.

But that doesn't mean Metallica plan to overlook their homeland.

On March 2 the band will launch a six-month, 73-show tour, the group's management announced Friday (December 5). All major markets will be covered, as well as smaller cities like Fargo, North Dakota, and Boise, Idaho.

The band had hoped to book the documentary "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster" at theaters in each city along the route, coinciding with the shows (see "Documentary Probes The Drama Behind Metallica's Anger"), but the movie won't be ready for theatrical release until May, according to director Joe Berlinger.

Even so, the band's management and the filmmakers hope to piggyback the movie with the latter part of the trek. "We're going to figure out a way to roll out the film from city to city with the tour," Berlinger said. "It's probably not going to be in every city on the tour, but we will be able to hit a lot of the dates."

"Metallica: Some Kind of Monster" will also play in art houses across North America. "The film serves two very distinct audiences," Berlinger explained. "One is obviously the hardcore Metallica fanbase. The other is anyone who goes for independent documentary films like [our 1992 movie] 'Brother's Keeper.' "

The movie has been accepted at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, which begins January 15 in Park City, Utah.
