New Releases: The Strokes, R.E.M., Hatebreed, Luther Vandross, Devildriver, Gerald Levert & More

Soulful heavyweights, up-and-coming metal acts round out week's offerings.

Only one song on the new Strokes album is over three-and-a-half minutes long, and the whole CD clocks it at just over a half hour. It might leave some asking, Is This It?

It is. With Room on Fire, the band says more in 30 minutes than many express in a full 70. Economy is key on songs that are fueled by quirky riffs, head-swimming melodies and clever lyrics that, while sometimes indulgent, are never belabored.

Less is less might be a good theme for this week's album chart, which doesn't include many other hugely anticipated releases. There are still a handful of noteworthy records, including R.E.M.'s second greatest hits album, In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1988 - 2003. The record includes singles such as "Stand," "Pop Song '89" and "Everybody Hurts" along with soundtrack cuts from "Coneheads," "Until the End of the World" "A Life Less Ordinary" and "Batman and Robin."

Several impressive metal albums will be released this week including the second major-label release by Hatebreed, The Rise of Brutality. The band, fronted by "Headbanger's Ball" host Jamey Jasta, plays ripping hardcore metal that fuses styles of bands like Slayer and Agnostic Front. Devildriver, the group from former Coal Chamber singer Dez Fafara, will release its nefarious self-titled debut, which combines black metal, death metal and thrash into a dangerous feast of demolition. Also look for the eponymous release by Element Eighty, a new band inspired by Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, Tool and Led Zeppelin.
