It's been a rough few weeks for first season "American Idol" runner-up Justin Guarini. First, his movie with "Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson, "From Justin to Kelly," tanked at the box office, his debut album has dropped 60 spots from its debut at #20 three weeks ago and now the singer is facing possible jail time for a near-miss accident on his water scooter.
Guarini, 24, was ticketed by Grand Prairie, Texas, police on Saturday when the personal watercraft he was driving nearly struck a 5-year-old girl at Joe Pool Lake, according to a Texas Parks and Wildlife spokesperson.
Guarini was riding the water vehicle while in the company of Clarkson and five other friends when the incident allegedly occurred. A spokesperson for the lake patrol said Guarini and Clarkson apparently didn't understand local water-safety laws, but the girl's father was quoted by the Associated Press as saying that Guarini ran his craft onto the shore and screeched to a halt just a few feet from his 5-year-old daughter.
City marshal Clint Heizer said Guarini flashed his signature smile as he rolled off the watercraft and ran away laughing, even as the vehicle came dangerously close to the girl.
If convicted of the charge of unsafe boat operation, Guarini could be looking at a maximum of 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,000, according to the Parks spokesperson.
Guarini's label, RCA Records, had no comment on the incident.
