Noel Redding, the bassist for the Jimi Hendrix Experience, died Sunday at his home in Ireland of unknown causes. He was 57. Redding joined the Experience in 1966 and recorded three albums with the band before leaving in 1969. He subsequently formed various groups including Fat Mattress, Road and the Noel Redding Band. ...

Former Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan will release a new solo album called Bubblegum this summer. The disc will feature guest appearances by Guns N' Roses alumni Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan, fellow Queens of the Stone Age members Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri, PJ Harvey, Dean Ween, former Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli and others. ... Carlos Santana has introduced a line of children's drums, which will be sold this month at Borders Books and Music stores in and around San Francisco. On Saturday, seminars will be held in which instructors will use Santana's music to teach kids to make noises to annoy their unsuspecting parents. Santana won't partake in the cacophony, however, since he'll be at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, protecting his hearing. A portion of the profits from sales will benefit the Milagro Foundation, which serves disadvantaged youth through educational programs and health services. ... Michael Jackson, who went to war last year with Sony Music, is now suing his old record label Motown, seeking unpaid royalties and rights to his catalog. The lawsuit, filed on Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, accuses Motown Records and its Universal Music parent company of reneging on the terms of a 1980 agreement that settled an acrimonious split from Motown by Jackson and his brothers in 1976. ...

Stevie Wonder, Musiq, Erykah Badu and Babyface are scheduled to join P. Diddy, Nappy Roots, Jaheim and Maze, among others, at the three-day Essence Music Festival. Taking place July 3-5 at New Orleans' Superdome, the festival covers five stages and will be emceed by a variety of hosts including Jamie Foxx and A.J. Jamal.
