Halle Will Play Catwoman, But Will Brendan Be Superman?

Fraser must beat out soap star Matthew Bomer for Man of Steel role.

They may not look so similar in the pages of comic books, but Catwoman and the X-Men’s Storm will look a lot alike to moviegoers now that Warner Bros. has secured Halle Berry to play Batman’s femme fatale nemesis.

In other comic casting, director Brett Ratner is reportedly choosing between Brendan Fraser and soap opera regular Matthew Bomer to lead his “Superman” trilogy.

This news follows screen tests with young actors like Ashton Kutcher (“That ’70s Show”) and Josh Hartnett (“Pearl Harbor”), who was offered the Man of Steel role but turned it down (see “Ashton Kutcher, Josh Hartnett Considered For ‘Superman’ “ ). Paul Walker screen-tested last week but dropped out of the running on his own. He’ll next be seen in the sequel to “The Fast and the Furious” (see ” ‘Fast And The Furious 2′ Rolling Fine Without Diesel, Ja Rule” ).

Superman hasn’t flown on the big screen since 1987′s “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace,” the last in a series of films to feature Christopher Reeve in the red and blue tights. “Rush Hour” director Ratner is looking to revive the DC Comics hero with a script penned by “Alias” creator J.J. Abrams, handed to him after onetime video director McG dropped the project to make “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” (see “Blood Oath Brings Charlie’s Angels Together For ‘Intense’ Sequel” ).

As for Berry, her “Catwoman” movie will be directed by French filmmaker Pitof later this year. Ashley Judd had been attached to the role (see “Sequel Mania — The Other Attack Of The Clones” ), which was tackled by Michelle Pfeiffer in 1992′s “Batman Returns.” The current script sees a new Catwoman emerging to seek justice and revenge on an old boss.

Berry reprises her role as Storm in the “X-Men” sequel “X2,” due May 2 (see ” ‘X2′ Set Visit Uncovers Secrets: X-Mansion Attack, Better Hair For Halle” ).
