Fans of Run-DMC can now pay tribute to Jam Master Jay with their feet.
On Tuesday (January 21), which would have been the slain turntable legend's
38th birthday, Adidas, in conjunction with JMJ's wife and three sons,
released a special commemorative edition of the company's classic Superstar
sneaker, this one called the Jason Mizell Ultrastar. The Ultrastars, which
Jam Master Jay's three sons helped to design, feature both JMJ's name and
picture on them.
Only 5,000 of these special kicks will be sold at selected Adidas stores and
their company Web site, as well as at Run-DMC's favorite local sneaker store,
Moe's Sneaker Spot in Jamaica, Queens. According to the owner of Moe's, Mitch
Toubin, fans have already snapped up nearly 200 pairs of the $100 Ultrastars,
with some customers traveling from as far as Florida and Maryland for a pair.
All proceeds from the sales of the shoes will be donated to New York's
Scratch DJ Academy, where JMJ once taught young aspiring turntablists.
Jam Master Jay was fatally shot on October 30 in his Queens, New York, studio
