Mixtape Mondays: 50 Cent And The G-Unit

50 fires back at Ja Rule and Murder Inc. on The Future Is Now.

  • Name: 50 Cent and the G-Unit

  • Mixtape: The Future Is Now

  • Hometown: Queens, New York

  • Joints to check for: "Doin' My Own Thing," "I Smell Pu---," various skits about Ja Rule

  • Previous mixtapes: Too many to name

  • The 411: Sometimes it feels like you can't walk two blocks in New York without some young teenager randomly exclaiming, "G,G,G,G,G,G, G-Unit!" 50 Cent and his cohorts Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo undoubtedly have executed a street takeover, appealing not only to their age group but to the kids as well.

Don't be fooled by its lullaby chimes and the sing-songy melody, "I Smell Pu---" is far from child's play. 50 starts off the song questioning how gully his longtime nemesis Murder Inc. really is, and suddenly the would-be dis record turns into a love song, with the G-Unit rapping about their dealings with a few birdbrained girls.

But after Ja Rule and Irv Gotti's recent tongue-lashing and public allegations about 50, you knew the Queens MC had to respond. (A portion of a Ja Rule interview on New York radio station Hot 97, where he accuses 50 of being a police informant and taking out an order of protection against him and Irv Gotti, is on the mixtape). On The Future Is Now, which is presented by up-and-coming mixtape titan Big Mike, 50 most notably satirizes Ja's penchant for doing duets, with skits that have a gravelly voiced man singing off-key to the tunes of Shakira and Enrique Iglesias, among others.

Just to show it's not all bad in the 'hood, though, the Unit display their usual song reworking, jacking Groove Theory's "Tell Me" and the Eastsidaz's "G'd Up" for, respectively, "Doin' My Own Thing" and "Stay Gangsta'd Up," in which 50 gives a rest-in-peace shout-out to Jam Master Jay.

If you still can't get enough of the crew, they have two other new mixtapes circulating, God's Plan and Automatic Gunfire.
