Regina King is so excited to be part of "Legally Blonde 2" she could cry.
"I'm a big fan of [Reese Witherspoon, but] it looks like we're also going to have Sally Field, which is bringing me to tears, because I just absolutely love her," said the 31-year-old actress who played Ice Cube's little sister in the original "Friday." "She's the reason I decided to be an actress."
King joins a cast that already includes Luke Wilson, sitcom veteran Bob Newhart and, of course, Reese Witherspoon, who rode the wave of the original's success to a headlining and producing role in "Sweet Home Alabama" and now "Legally Blonde 2: Red White and Blonde."
Witherspoon explained recently that in "Blonde 2" her perky but smart Elle Woods character is now, "a corporate lawyer who becomes very upset about something that is happening in her town and decides she's going to go to Washington to try to get this law passed. I don't want to give away too much of it. It is very funny" (see "It's Witherspoon Versus Washington In 'Legally Blonde 2' ").
King, on the other hand, was a bit more forthcoming. "[Elle] is trying to get a law passed to stop cosmetic animal testing," she revealed. "I play the chief of staff to Congresswoman Rudd, who is Sally Field's character."
She described her character as "very driven but not exactly the nicest woman." "The Elle character and her don't get along in the beginning. Or I should say she doesn't get along with Elle, because Elle pretty much gets along with everyone. By the end of the film she totally ends up having the utmost respect for Elle's character. It's kind of like the Selma Blair character [in 'Legally Blonde']."
"Legally Blonde 2" is filming in Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles. Before it hits theaters next year, moviegoers will get to see King in the Eddie Murphy comedy "Daddy Day Care," due in May.
