Surrounded by his manager, his lawyer, his accountant and a wall full of Pepsi-Cola logos, Michael Jackson handed over a check for $450,000 a donation courtesy of himself and Pepsi to the Princess' Trust, a children's charity. He also gifted Princess Diana (who was killed in a car accident in 1997) and Prince Charles with a set of tour jackets. The singer had this to say about the encounter: "Very excited."
Pop singer Pebbles was riding high this week in 1988 with the success of her top 10 singles "Girlfriend" and "Mercedes Boy." The artist also known as Perri McKissack let MTV News in on who she really was.
"Pebbles and Perri which is my real name are one and the same," she said. "I don't change characters when I get in front of a crowd like some artists do. I stay the same all the time and it all plays a part of me. I love being in pretty clothes and makeup and hair. I'm really into all of that and I really love business and that's just me."
So what would it take to get a ride in Pebbles' Mercedes?
"First, would I ever pull over and pick up a guy? No," she said. "Secondly, he'd have to be a heck of a guy. Someone who could tell me to be quiet when it's time to be quiet and talk when it's time to talk."
(Pebbles went on to assemble a group by the name of TLC.)
With the movie "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" and his kids' TV show "Pee-wee's Playhouse" runaway hits, Pee-wee Herman, a.k.a. actor Paul Reubens, became a genuine pop icon. And this week in 1988, his name was even added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
"I'm a huge superstar now, so ... I mean, you have to throw at least one tantrum a day," Pee-wee said.
Besides his stardom, Pee-wee's interests were growing a bit more mature. In "Big Adventure" he had love only for his bicycle, but in his follow-up film, "Big Top Pee-wee," he found love for women and performed kissing scenes that would go down in cinematic history. We asked him whether he had an offscreen romance with either of his two leading ladies.
"Wouldn't you like to know?" he replied with his trademark laugh. "I'm so sure, like did I have a ... like I'm really going to answer that question."
Movie star, TV star, star on the Walk of Fame. All this star stuff had Pee-wee waxing philosophical. "If you have problems and you're famous at least you're famous, you know, as opposed to just having problems," he proclaimed.
(On July 26, 1991, Reubens was arrested in a porn theater and rung up on indecent exposure charges. His star was subsequently yanked from the Walk of Fame, and the Pee-wee character he'd created was blackballed by Hollywood.)
