Nelly was the guest of honor Wednesday night at a shindig held by Universal Records and The Source magazine at club Suede in New York. The party was not only to celebrate the June 25 release of Nellyville, but also to congratulate the rapper for appearing on the cover of the publication's July 2002 issue. ... Not to be outdone by their newsstand rivals, Vibe magazine had a party within walking distance to celebrate their current issue with Ashanti on the cover. The singer was on hand with members of her Murder Inc. fam to perform two songs: "Happy" and "Foolish." ...

Though it's been talked about for months, Arista Records and Bad Boy Records ended their partnership on Thursday (June 20). Under the agreement, label chief P. Diddy keeps his entire catalog as well as every artist on Bad Boy. ... Ludacris and Musiq will make an appearance on the Showtime series "Soul Food" in an episode entitled "Tonight at Noon," during which Musiq will perform his new single, "Don't Change." The new season of "Soul Food" kicks off on June 26. (MTV's parent company, Viacom, also owns Showtime.) ...

David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar have announced dates for the second leg of their co-headlining tour. The shows begin July 23 in Bossier City, Louisiana and wrap up on September 7 in Las Vegas. ... Nine Days and Blues Traveler are slated to perform at Ben & Jerry's One World-One Heart music festival on June 22 at the Sugarbush Resort in Warren, Vermont. The event, which also features Big Head Todd & the Monsters, the Samples, the Iguanas and Sarah Harmer on the bill, will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and admission is free. ...

Erykah Badu has returned to the studio to record new material for a yet-untitled EP, due August 27. The first single, "Love of My Life," features Common and will appear on the soundtrack for the Taye Diggs film "Brown Sugar," which will feature appearances by Method Man, Mos Def, Queen Latifah and former New Edition member Ralph Tresvant. ... Also due August 27 is Lost in Space, Aimee Mann's follow-up to 2000's Bachelor No. 2, on the singer's own label. Mann's husband, Michael Penn, guests on the record, along with Jason Falkner and Jon Brion. ...

Metallica frontman James Hetfield will play guitar on a remix of country singer Carolyn Dawn Johnson's single, "So Complicated." Jesse Leach, vocalist for metallic hardcore upstarts Killswitch Engage, has left the band due to "personal issues and vocal strain," according to a statement issued by Roadrunner Records, which indicated the band "anticipate[s] his return in the future." The group recruited a temporary replacement in order to complete its current tour with Kittie, Poison the Well and Shadows Fall. ... Former the Verve members Simon Jones (bass) and Simon Tong (guitar) have formed a new band, the Shining, with drummer Mark Heaney, guitarist Dan MacBean and singer Duncan Baxter. The group's maiden LP, True Skies, is expected to arrive this fall.
