‘Lord Of The Rings,’ ‘Fast And The Furious’ Top MTV Movie Award Nominees

'Rush Hour 2,' 'Moulin Rouge,' 'Shrek' also snap up noms.

Sure, “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” was an Oscar favorite, but is it better than “Legally Blonde”?

The fantasy epic and the Reese Witherspoon comedy earned nods for Best Movie when nominees for the 2002 MTV Movie Awards were handed out on Tuesday morning (April 23).

“The Lord of the Rings” and “Legally Blonde” will square off against “Black Hawk Down,” “The Fast and the Furious” and “Shrek” for the night’s top honor when the awards are handed out at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium on June 1. (The event will air on June 6 at 9 p.m on MTV.) After weeding through the nominees, viewers can vote for this year’s winners at MTV.com.

While the Movie Awards has traditionally marched to its own beat (bestowing a lifetime achievement award to Chewbacca and handing out honors for Best Kiss), this year’s show finds itself oddly in sync with Oscar voters. “Lord of the Rings” — which led the Oscar nominee pack earlier this year — grabbed the most MTV Movie Award nominations as well, with six. Of course, that’s where the similarities end, as “The Fast and the Furious” and “Rush Hour 2″ each earned five nominations. “Moulin Rouge,” “Shrek,” “A Knight’s Tale,” “Legally Blonde,” “Pearl Harbor,” “American Pie 2,” “Black Hawk Down” and “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” also earned multiple nominations.

Russell Crowe (“A Beautiful Mind”), Vin Diesel (“The Fast and the Furious”), Josh Hartnett (“Pearl Harbor”), Will Smith (“Ali”), and Elijah Wood (“The Lord of the Rings”) will vie for Best Male Performance, while Kate Beckinsale (“Pearl Harbor”), Halle Berry (“Monster’s Ball”), Angelina Jolie (“Lara Croft: Tomb Raider”), Nicole Kidman (“Moulin Rouge”), and Reese Witherspoon (“Legally Blonde”) will duke it out for Best Female Performance.

This year’s pack of nominees is also thick with musical artists looking to ditch their day jobs for the world of film: DMX is up for Breakthrough Male, Britney Spears and Mandy Moore will vie for Breakthrough Female, and the late Aaliyah is nominated for Best Villain for her work in “Queen of the Damned.”
