Nas, P. Diddy, Wu-Tang Addressing Youth At NY Hip-Hop Summit

Inspirational, educational initiatives to launch on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Russell Simmons and the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network will reach out to those they aim to protect the most — the kids — with a Hip-Hop Youth Summit on January 21.

Simmons, Nas, Fat Joe, members of the Wu-Tang Clan, Rev. Run and P. Diddy are all expected to attend the event, which will be held at York College in Queens, New York.

In addition to honoring Dr. Martin Luther King on his national holiday and holding a politicking session between rappers and young people, the summit will put an anti-drug campaign called "Game Over" into effect. Through the program, rappers will tell kids about the ills of drug use by taking part in public service announcements and visiting schools.

Other programs that will commence as part of the summit are "Read to Succeed," which stresses the importance of academic prosperity, and "Dream of King," a essay contest where students write about how hip-hop music is helping to fulfill the wishes of Dr. King in his "I Have a Dream" speech.

"It's very fitting for hip-hop to celebrate the living legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.," Hip-Hop Summit Action Network President Minister Benjamin Muhammad said in a statement. "Dr. King was at the forefront of demanding justice and social change in the 20th century, and the hip-hop community is at the forefront of demanding justice and social change in the 21st century."

The Hip-Hop Summit Action Network will cater to adults on February 13 and 14 with a National Hip-Hop Summit in Los Angeles, and several members of the West Coast community are expected to attend (see [article id="1451785"]"West Coast Rappers Steppin' Up To The Mic At Their Own Summit" [/article]).

The network's first national summit took place in New York last summer, and Scarface, P. Diddy and Luther Campbell were among those on hand to discuss resolutions to problems plaguing the hip-hop community (see [article id="1444510"]"P. Diddy, Jermaine Dupri Help Announce Hip-Hop Initiatives" [/article]).
