Billy Corgan Ready To Debut His New Band, Zwan

Group will play four shows in Southern California this month.

Billy Corgan will debut his new band, Zwan, at four Southern California club dates later this month.

Zwan consists of Corgan, former Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, Chavez singer/guitarist Matt Sweeney and a bassist by the name of Skullfisher. A spokesperson for Corgan had no information on Skullfisher.

“This is Billy’s new band; it’s not a side project,” the spokesperson said.

Corgan said in July he was recording demos of new material, but he did not divulge any details because he said he was “trying to be flexible about all aspects of it, the music and the personnel” (see “Billy Corgan Working On Demos For Post-Pumpkins LP” ). His spokesperson said Zwan was likely the personnel Corgan was referring to.

Smashing Pumpkins disbanded in December with a pair of farewell shows in their hometown of Chicago (see “Pumpkins Circus Folds Up With Epic Show” ). Since then, Corgan has recorded material with Marianne Faithfull, New Order and Paul Oakenfold and has performed with New Order at several shows.

Around the same time Corgan debuts his new band, a documentary on his old group will be screened in several cities, including Los Angeles and New York. The 47-minute film, which will be released on VHS and DVD on November 20 as part of “The Smashing Pumpkins Greatest Hits Video Collection 1991-2000,” follows the Smashing Pumpkins from their first show at Chicago’s Metro club to their last at the same venue. It includes interviews with Corgan, Chamberlain and Pumpkins guitarist James Iha.
