Help Wanted: Categories Needed For My VH1 Awards

Music fans will also choose nominees, winners.

Voting for the second annual My VH1 Music Awards began Wednesday, even though there are no artists or songs to vote for yet.

As they did last year, music fans — who will eventually determine the show's nominees and winners — are being asked to pick the award categories.

Votes can be cast online at, and the results will be revealed at the My VH1 Music Awards ceremony, broadcast live on December 2 from Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium, a spokesperson for the channel said.

The selection process takes place in three stages. Visitors to the site can cast their votes for this year's categories until September 30. The categories aren't like those at other awards shows. Last year's ceremony featured such categories as Your Song Kicked Ass, But Was Played Too Damn Much (with the award going to Santana's "Smooth"), Most Entertaining Public Feud (Eminem vs. Everyone) and Best Stage Spectacle (Metallica with the San Francisco Symphony).

On October 1, the categories will be announced and fans can start determining the nominees. Nomination selection ends November 1.

Five nominees from each category will be announced November 2, and fans are allowed to throw their weight behind one in each class until the last moment before the awards are presented on December 2.

Fans are also given the opportunity to design the actual award that will be presented to the winners. Design drafts must be submitted by September 30.

A host for the show and performers will be announced later.

Last year, Creed walked away as the big winners, taking home trophies for Group of the Year, Song of the Year ("Higher"), Welcome to the Big Time and 2-for-2, an honor bestowed on an artist that has followed up one hit album with another equally successful LP (see "Creed Blessed At My VH1 Awards").
